In Memory of Cameron Phibbs, Support the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation when you “Like” our Facebook page

Friday, September 2nd, 2011 by Kent Riopelle

In February 2006, Cam Phibbs, a close family friend, loving husband and father, lost his life to cancer at the young age of 63.  Since then, the Cam Phibbs Memorial Golf Tournament not only pays tribute to his life and all he did for his community but also benefits the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario at Kingston General Hospital through the purchase of patient care equipment.

Cam Phibbs was a husband, father, and entrepreneur in the construction industry in Kingston, Ontario, Canada for over 35 years. He was a cornerstone of his industry, and his city, and gave back both financially and with his time, whenever possible. When he was diagnosed with cancer he began a short hard fought battle at the Kingston General Hospital, which lasted only 2 months. While hospitalized, he received the best care and support for his family anyone could ask for. The fantastic doctors and amazing nurses helped both Cam and the rest of the family through the most difficult times of all. They could never have provided this level of service without the help of privately raised funds from events such as this one.

After his passing, the Phibbs family decided to have an annual event that would bring family and friends together to celebrate his life, and give back to the place that helped so much. The proceeds from this tournament have been used to purchase patient care equipment, such as specialized beds that set new standards for patient safety and comfort.  Unfortunately, the very bed that helped Cam rest so comfortably in the last days of his life is not available to all patients on the unit due to the large costs associated with purchasing them.

We need your help to raise funds for this type of equipment, so that more people can benefit from the great quality of care Cam received.   The patients deserve this quality of care, and the staff deserve to be able to provide it.

Support the Starkey Hearing Foundation when you “Like” our Facebook Page

Monday, August 1st, 2011 by Amanda Borgsdorf

Hearing all the sounds of the world, quiet or loud, is something that many of us take for granted. Yet, hearing loss affects 34 million people in the United States alone, an average of one in 10 Americans (Starkey Hearing Foundation).

After watching my own family member struggle with access to appropriate hearing aids, I’ve selected the Starkey Hearing Foundation for Blue Cottage Consulting’s Quarterly Social Media Donation Campaign. Blue Cottage is donating $1 to the Starkey Hearing Foundation for every new “Like” our Facebook Page receives between now and August 31, 2011 (not to exceed $100). In passing consideration, it may be thought by many that hearing loss can readily be mitigated with the use of a hearing aid.  However, it is not that easy for millions of people around the world.  Hearing aids or instruments can cost thousands of dollars.  While some insurance plans in the U.S. cover some or all of the expense of a hearing aid, not all do—not to mention the millions of Americans who do not have access to any type of health insurance coverage.  As well, there are programs to assist people in accessing hearing aids, but not everybody qualifies for one of these programs. For a myriad of reasons, only one out of five people who could benefit from a hearing aid actually wears one (Starkey Hearing Foundation). After obtaining an aid, the journey isn’t over—most of us do not think about the cumulative, recurring cost of batteries.

More information about Starkey Hearing Foundation

In 1984 The Starkey Foundation was founded to “change the social consciousness of hearing through education and research while providing the gift of hearing to those in need around the world.” With “So the World May Hear” as his goal, Starkey Hearing Foundation founder William F. Austin built an organization upon this vision. Today the Foundation is sustained by the efforts of thousands of volunteers and donors around the world.

One of the foundation’s programs, Hear Now, is a national non-profit program committed to assisting those permanently residing in the U.S. who are deaf or hard of hearing and have no other resources to acquire hearing aids. The Hear Now program of the Starkey Hearing Foundation also collects hearing aids for recycling purposes. Any make or model, regardless of age, can be donated to the hearing aid recycling program to further facilitate access to hearing instruments.

In Memory of Charles Carey, Support the Alzheimer’s Association when you “Like” our Facebook Page

It wasn’t too long ago my grandfather, Charles Carey passed away due to complications associated with Alzheimer’s. In honor of my wonderful grandfather and all those who are dealing with Alzheimer’s, Blue Cottage is donating $1 to the Alzheimer’s Association for every new “Like” our Facebook Page receives between now and May 31, 2011 (not to exceed $100). Show your support and help the Alzheimer’s Association by suggesting our page to your friends today!

In Memory of Charles Carey

As spring approached this year, thoughts of my grandfather arose putting a smile on my face.  I was immediately taken back to my childhood at his home where my brother and I would pick and eat apples, ride his tractor, and admire him for the amazing crafts he could build and refinish.  Everything from old clocks, furniture or build something amazing he saw in a magazine or store from some old wood he found in a barn.  He was truly an artist.  I was lucky enough to be a recipient of these precious pieces and to this day they are my most treasured items.
My grandfather had dealt with heart trouble for many years, but never did anyone in the family think that this brilliant carpenter would lose his intellectual functioning.  Watching grandpa slowly slip away in front of my eyes due to Alzheimer’s was disheartening, but watching my grandmother, father, and his siblings go through it was most painful.
